I had one of those weird dreams the other night. You know the kind–the ones that happen right as you’re waking up, and it takes you a few minutes to sort out what’s real and what isn’t. I rolled over in bed and saw huge butterflies with black and dark violet wings fluttering around my room. Some of them were on the ground, dying, and some were still in the air, but just seemed to be waiting for their turn. Eventually I realized that there weren’t really butterflies in my …

HAL 9000, upgraded.

I keep going back to Engelbart’s assertion that computers shouldn’t be easy to use. Do I agree with it? I know I don’t believe that computers should be difficult to use just for the sake of being difficult, but they shouldn’t be easy either. This isn’t exactly directly related to anything discussed in class, but as it is something internet-related, I’m going to claim relevance. “Even the way you lie tells the truth about who you are.”
I’ve given this statement a lot of thought, and I think I can only partially agree with it. It depends entirely upon the who the person doing the lying is and who the observer is. Not everyone is equally transparent, just as not everyone is equally discerning. For the people in the movie, this statement works fine, but it doesn’t hold up universally. If you’re trying to convince yourself that a lie is true, then of course it’s fairly …

I was sitting in the Wash Room a few days ago, diligently reading my copy of Little Women. Upon realizing exactly what book I was reading, a guy sitting near me exclaimed:
“Oh! I hate that book! My mother made me read it when I was seven and I couldn’t stand it!”
So this proves three things.
1) While it is possible that a father giving his daughter Little Women will result in a positive experience for her, the reverse is not true. Boys just don’t seem to enjoy this book, even if …

A fairly illogical blog title, yes. (Made even more so by the fact that I’m referencing a silent movie in a film text class. Hehe.)
But hey, who can resist Chaplin?
